Simple steps on how to convince your wife in letting you get that latest Xbox, PlayStation or Nintendo.
If you’re reading this, then your wife obviously is not keen on the idea of letting you get a gaming console, be it an Xbox, Playstation or Nintendo. But is convincing your wife to let you get the latest gaming console possible? The good news is yes, it’s definitely possible. And if you follow my tips, then your gaming days may yet live on.
A Quick Story About My First Console Purchase After I Was Married
My first gaming console after I got married was an Xbox 360. While I was single, I owned a PlayStation 2 and a regular Xbox. All of my friends were still single and had all gone on to get an Xbox 360, so naturally I wanted one to.
Now this is an example of what not to do, and this is how I got my first console post marriage. Spoiler alert – there was no convincing my wife on letting me get a console.
My wife bought me a whole lot of gifts for Christmas one year, most of which I didn’t really like. I mean, one gift was this huge beach towel (I’m 6’4″). I mean seriously, a beach towel? Anyway, me being me, I asked if she kept the receipts, which she fortunately did. So, I took all of the gifts back to the shopping centre and got myself an Xbox 360. 😁
“Anyway, me being me, I asked if she kept the receipts, which she fortunately did. So, I took all of the gifts back to the shopping centre and got myself an Xbox 360.”
When I returned home and showed my wife, I can’t say she was overly pleased. But because it was Christmas she was okay with it, albeit begrudgingly.
While this technically worked, I definitely don’t recommend it. It’s wrong for a lot of reasons but none of which I’m going to go into. Instead, let’s talk about how to get that console in a much healthier way.
Convincing your wife in letting you get an Xbox or PlayStation. Follow these steps.
So I got my Xbox One X using these steps below. Now don’t get me wrong, I could easily just go out and buy whatever gaming console I wanted to, but I wanted my wife to feel comfortable with the purchase at the same time. So how did I do it? It was pretty easy actually.
- Let your wife know how badly you want it. Speak to them like a nerd geeking out.
- Ask your wife what she thinks about you getting a new console
- Address your wife’s concerns by creating a game plan
- Get your console
Simple right? That’s because it actually is, once you’re willing to put a little effort into it. But let’s break down the points to paint the picture better.
Let Your Wife Know How Badly You Want It. Speak To Them Like A Nerd Geeking Out.
This first step is easy, particularly so if there’s a new console or tech piece right around the corner. Reading up on all of the rumours pre-release then all the reviews post release gives you all the nerd jargon/ammunition you’ll need to show your wife just how excited you are. And it’s important they realise just how much you want it as well.
Ask Your Wife What She Thinks About You Getting A New Console
“After you’ve hyped up the console you want to the point where your wife’s ears physically hurt, you’re ready to really find out how she feels about it.”
After you’ve hyped up the console you want to the point where your wife’s ears physically hurt, you’re ready to really find out how she feels about it. Ask her what her thoughts are on you getting a new console. Discover why she doesn’t want you to have one. If you can find out why exactly she doesn’t want you to have a console then you can start working on a plan to fix that.
Your wife might not want you to get a console because:
- It’ll take time away from the two of you
- She feels you don’t have time to play games between your work, children and marriage commitments
- Her friend’s Husband has one and she only hears stories about their bad experiences
- She doesn’t want to fork out money on something she sees as a waste of time
There are numerous reasons why your wife might not want you to have a console. But as I mentioned, you MUST find out exactly what those reasons are. This is crucial in convincing your wife to let you get that console. Once you’ve done that, you can move onto the next step.
Address Your Wife’s Concerns By Creating A Game Plan
Okay, so you’ve found out why your wife doesn’t want you to have games, now all we need to do is figure out a strategy to fix that. Here’s what I did. And of course the difficulty level of this exercise will all depend on how much your wife is against you having video games.
What you need to do is to make a deal. A deal that states if you can come up with a plan to address any and all of her concerns, then she’ll be okay with you getting your console. Once you’ve got that promise between the two of you all you need to do is work out your strategy.
Areas you’ll need to focus on will probably be:
- The amount of time you’re going to play each day or week or month
- The types of games your wife will allow in the house (especially if you have kids)
- Online security and privacy if you plan on letting your kids play
- How much money you’ll spend on games, online accounts, subscriptions etc.
- How you’re actually going to pay for the console (they aren’t cheap after all)
Here’s some additional cheesy tips that might help in convincing your wife to let you get a console.
Explain that playing games might actually save your household money. The more you play at home, the less you spend going out. It can help build unique bonds between you and your kids by playing games together. It will help with your childs fine motory skills. It’s a cheap 4K blu ray player.
There are literally tonnes of advantages to getting a console, you just nee to think out of the box
Once you’ve come to a happy arrangement and have appeased all of your wife’s concerns the last step is…
Get Your Console
And that is that… well sort of. You’ll still have to hold up your end of the bargain and stick to all of the promises you made your wife before she gave you her blessing in the first place. Don’t betray her trust otherwise you might just find yourself console-less after waking up one morning (I’m not speaking from experience on this point😂).
